PRIVATE GARDENS

This year we offer you the choice of SIX unique and diverse private gardens to visit and enjoy, including large and small town gardens, quirky and eclectic gardens, sustainable gardens, and real country gardens.

BEAUVUE, CRESWICK

BeauVue is a garden born in the last 7 years from a 2-acre property that originally needed some vision to see its potential. Since then, it has been transformed into a series of gardens, water features and meditation areas. It was designed to offer a year-round beautiful aspect from the home, with a summer resort-like appeal for family and friends, and a journey of discovery for garden lovers.

Parking is available on the Street. The garden areas are mostly wheelchair accessible but there are hills and steps in some cases. Coffee van onsite both days.

NANDINA, CRESWICK

Welcome to our garden. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. We called our garden Nandina - the reason being, there's quite a few throughout the garden!

It has colour nearly all year round. There is always something different coming out in bloom. Which makes it quite beautiful. The two fish ponds add to the serenity. The frogs like to breed in there along with all the gold fish. The gazebo at the rear of the garden overlooks the 13th green on the golf course. There are quite a few different parts of the garden to explore. From the front of the house, there's a view over Creswick. And in the other direction there's a view of Springmount. It's really a lovely place to be.

OPHIR, CRESWICK

This 'Heritage Overlaid' cottage and garden dates from a bygone era. Follow the old villa garden path as you take a journey through a variety of garden rooms featuring stone grottos, fountains and even a Roman bath. A rich and diverse range of colourful flora is on view with traditional European plants and other exotics including a stonewalled cactus garden. Allow yourself time to enjoy the circular hedge lawn and delight at the ‘Fountain of Youth’. With over 20 years of planting and restoration the garden at 'Ophir' Cottage is full of surprises at every turn. A must see!

POZIERES, CRESWICK

This beautiful garden features hundreds of mature box hedges surrounding several different garden beds, featuring camellias, roses, irises and many more. There are a number of mature trees, including a 120 year old Algerian oak, and horse chestnut trees. The oak and one of the horse chestnuts are included on the significant tree register of the Hepburn Shire.

The garden and house have an interesting history. There has been a house on the land since 1855. The present house was built around 1906/7. It was sold by the owner, Mr C.W. Jebb, to the State Forest Commission in 1924 for £675, and was the District Forester's or Director of Forestry’ house for the next 65 years. The present owners, Bernard and Valda, purchased the property in June 1992 and named it Pozieres in memory of the 1916 battle of the Somme, when the Australian soldiers recaptured the village of Pozieres from the German Army, suffering 23,000 casualties dead or wounded. Bernard was born in that part of France just a few kilometres from Pozieres.

THYME COTTAGE, EGANSTOWN

This 2 acre predominately off-grid young garden has grown in so many ways since the last open gardens in 2019 The country cottage style garden rooms have flourished and are now distinctly different,nd the home is embedded nicely. The plants are both native and exotic and are chosen for foliage or flowers for bees and as inspiration for the artist in residence to paint.

This year the home craft brewer will be in his brew hut precinct all weekend to chat and demonstrate all aspects of his system from the hop bines grown on-site to finished product. We have also finished our pizza Italian garden, and homemade vegetarian pizzas with garden herbs and sugo will be available to purchase both days.

The 24 wicking vegetable garden beds will be open to wander, alongside the extended chook yard.

All the new cottage gardens are open, featuring a new art studio, and visitors are welcome to support the local CWA and partake of a Devonshire tea sitting anywhere on the property, maybe enjoying views to the east and the hills of Eganstown.

This property is only 5 minutes from charming Daylesford and 15 minutes to bustling Creswick. Safest parking is on Cemetery Road and the garden is on a gentle to mid slope with some step, so sensible shoes should be worn.

VENTION COTTAGE, CRESWICK

Vention Cottage is a garden within the township of Creswick. It is a garden full of plants carefully chosen for their uniqueness and diversity, planted to create a year round show, with colour and form emerging throughout the year.

Vention’s abundant trees are newly established (9 years) and are mostly deciduous, creating a canopy and allowing the fallen leaves to help build up a biodiverse soil which was once gold mining rubble. This, along with careful mulching, has allowed shade loving plants such as viburnums, hostas, hellebores, and hydrangeas and in the sunny places roses, salvias, eremophilas and many more.

There is no formality about the garden which allows the owner to plant in an informal way, although with a secret symmetry to it, while hardscaping is in keeping with the period of the home, with old bricks used for edging and old corrugated iron for the studio and sheds.

FIELD HOUSE, SPRINGMOUNT

DUE TO WATERLOGGING AFTER RECENT HEAVY RAINFALL, FIELD HOUSE WILL NOT BE OPEN FOR THE GARDEN LOVERS WEEKEND.

Field House is a park style garden set on 23 acres nestled on the edge of the Creswick State Forest in Springmount.

The garden, once a bare block now features a large landscaped dam which is a mecca for bird wildlife all year round. Waterlilies surround the island and shallow areas of the dam and flower over spring and summer.

There are over 400 deciduous trees providing spectacular autumn foliage and during spring and summer the property is covered in green leafy oaks, birches, maples and ash trees. Espaliered fruit trees form hedges protecting the vegetable and cottage garden areas.

Parking is available in the front paddock adjacent to the driveway and the house yard for anyone who has difficulty walking.

SHIRLEY'S GARDEN, CRESWICK NORTH

DUE TO WATERLOGGING AFTER RECENT HEAVY RAINFALL, SHIRLEY'S GARDEN WILL NOT BE OPEN FOR THE GARDEN LOVERS WEEKEND.

This garden is perhaps best described as a gradual evolvement. Although some garden beds were established quite some years apart, with distinctive bed size differences from one area to another, the general theme has always remained the same, a typical country garden with an English cottage garden flavour.

Shirley’s garden displays an amazing array of roses, (in excess of 500 plants) clematis, perennials, peonies, bulbs and rare or uncommon plants sourced far and wide. The garden usually displays its best blooms in spring to early summer. Due to the increase in garden beds over the years, and Shirley’s love for her garden, it now covers an area of approximately 2.5 acres.

There is ample parking on-site and although there is a slight fall in the land from back to front it is quite easy walking with no steps to negotiate.
