PRIVATE GARDENS

HEDGEROW

'Hedgerow' is named after the many hedges which border the garden. Privet, box, hawthorn and lavender hedges form spaces and rooms within the garden. The Victorian weatherboard cottage has views from the veranda to the north and the old red brick barn to the rear of the house has uninterrupted views overlooking the Pyrenees and the Great Dividing Range. The garden is a mixture of old and new. A beautiful old elm shades the lawn to the north of the veranda and an old holly to the east. New beds have been planted in the orchard paddock, including a dedicated rose garden, fruit tree walk, silver birch garden and a new vegetable patch. More recently a garden has been created in front of the old barn.

CHARNWOOD

Thirteen years ago when the current owners bought Charnwood it was basically a house on grass. What was a cypress dominated front garden is now mainly natives. From there, a camellia walk leads to the rear where the original expanse of grass, edged by well-established gums, is now a series of distinct but connected garden areas blending an attractive mixture of native and exotic plants. Pergolas, pathways and screens enhance the separation and the connection. Protected by a hedge of wattle is the vegetable garden, a recently planted orchard and rows of jostaberries. Challenged by the environment (frost, flood, snow, drought and clay soil), a policy of planting single specimens has been adopted. If they survive, more are planted!
